What houseplant can survive a summer unattended?
Q. I want to get my sister a houseplant for her dorm for Christmas, but she is unable to take it home during breaks and over the summer. Are there any suggestions for plants that would be able to survive without water for that long of a period of time? Cacti are problematic for her because she over waters them and they die. Can anything survive lots of water and then no water? she can't help it. she knows she shouldn't, but when she gets stressed she starts watering. There's no way around it that I know of.

Would the average person survive being attacked by two full grown Rottweiler?
Q. How to survive? What to do? And what type of person would be more likely to survive?
Asked by Buda B - Sat Dec 1 14:23:21 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the dogs' motivation. Survival depends on your ability to protect vital strike points while not escalating the aggression level in the dogs, and assumes that the dogs are not raising the level independant of your actions. What to do, specifically, is impossible to anticipate ... other than to know that you must be able to outsmart the dogs. Trying to overpower two determined rotts that are working together to bring you down is just not very likely. The type of person most likely to survive is one who can endure several minutes of extreme pain without further exciting the dogs. Those things said, the very best way to survive any attack from any perpetrator, two legged or four, is to be smart enough not to put yourself… [cont.]

How many marriages survive an affair?
Q. I've read on several websites that the majority of marriages survive an affair but then when I see statistics it says that only 35% survive and that only about 15% of those that do survive end up happy in the end. Does anyone know what the real statistics are? Do most survive? If so, do you really think they are happy again?
Asked by Unsure - Tue May 4 22:36:08 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know the statistics, but ours survived. She cheated. We went to counseling. She had to learn why she did it and I had to learn how to forgive her. It took work on both parts. Neither of us wanted to end our marriage. Now, 35 yrs later, we are still together. And we have never mentioned it again since therapy ended.

How to survive in Paris on a students wage?
Q. I am interested in moving to Paris next year to study at Sorbonne university as an international student. I have read that international students are only aloud to work part-time. Most people say that living in Paris can be somewhat expensive. Is it possible to survive only on a part-time wage, of course it all depends on being able to actually find a job first lol Thanks :)

A. International students have the right to work in France if they have a residency permit and are enrolled in an institution that participates in the student health plan of the French social protection system (Securite Sociale). Even first-time visitors to France and students enrolled in the first year of postsecondary education enjoy the right to work. The work week in France (annually averaged) is 35 hours. French law allows international students to work no more than 884 hours in a given year. That translates to half-time employment (19.5 hours per week) during the academic year and full-time during vacations. Supplementing your income by working while studying is a common practice. You won't be able to meet all of your expenses by… [cont.]

How can a small restaurant survive given that most everybody is cutting back on eating out?
Q. All kinds of small restaurants here in Boston have shut down altogether or I have observed that their clientele has greatly diminished and we "ain't" even close to being out of the recession. Can they survive? Should they survive, I mean should people simply stop eating out and just horde money? Thanks for your thoughts.

How do plants survive when they lose all their leaves after storms?
Q. Many trees seem to readily survive the loss of their leaves, even though they are the main synthesizing organs. Why is this so?
Asked by Unique - Mon Feb 2 17:57:20 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is as if it is again early spring to them. All winter the tops lay dormant. They have the food supply from the previous year. In summer the tree is storing some of all that energy it is photosynthesizing. If the leaves are torn off or eaten by insects they have enough energy stored to rebuild their factory. Of course there is a critical amount of energy they must maintain to survive. Several bad bouts can kill the tree if it can't store up enough energy to send out new leaves. The stems and branches with green can also photosynthesize to help out. With no leaves they are back in direct sunlight and can go wide open. Some desert trees will lose their leaves on purpose so they wonl' continue to lose water during times of severe… [cont.]

A. Although some women think they are having their period while pregnant, it is not the same thing. Bleeding during pregnancy can happen for many reasons, such as implantation, or shedding the lining of the uterus. Not all bleedings are menstrual.

How did animals survive after the flood?
Q. Vegetation/plant-life wouldn't have survived a 150 day flood. All herbivores would've died without any vegetation to eat. Even if there were still plant-life around for the herbivores to eat, all the carnivores would only have the two of each surviving animal to eat. So all the herbivores either died from starvation, died from being eaten or both. After all the herbivores have died (which were only two of each) there would've been no food left for the carnivores. So how did any animal survive after the flood?
Asked by Jereme K - Thu Aug 20 02:47:30 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to the Atheist scientists who discovered that there truly was a large flood that created the Dead Sea, a huge flood covered the known world at that time. Anyone at that time who would have survived would have probably assumed the whole world was hit.

What freshwater plants can survive in my aquarium? I have a 120 watt light fixture and no CO2 system.?
Q. I have a 135 gallon tank that's 72" x 18" x 24". I know that this is too weak to grow most plants but I can't afford stronger lighting nor a CO2 system at the moment. So what plants can survive in these conditions?
Asked by fishfrenzy - Thu May 29 05:15:44 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Go with hardy low-light plants such as: Vallis Hygrophilia Cabomba Hornwort Riccia Java Moss Java Fern Anubias Crypts Swords Supplement them with ferts including liquid and root tabs. Some of these species come in various forms so you can have some variation in the tank. It will be a little trial and error, I've been through dozens of species and currently have thriving hygrophilia (wide leaf) with enough cuttings for all my tanks in low light small tanks.

what saltwater anemones can survive in a 30 gallon tank with halide lighting?
Q. I have 2 clown fish in a 30 gallon tank. I want to get them an anemone but i dont know what kind can survive in a 30 gallon tank. I will be getting a halide light fixture.
Asked by crey337337 - Sun Nov 25 01:28:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It really depends on the type of clowns you have. If you have Tomato or Clarkii Clownfish, you could keep a Bubble Tip or Long Tentacle Anemone in there with no problems. Bubble Tips are generally the most hardy, and they don't get as large as other anemones. An Ocellaris or Percula won't host these smaller anemones naturally, so they will probably just ignore them. They host anemones that are much too large for a 30 gallon aquarium. Just watch your water temperature and evaporation with the halide over the 30 gallon. Check out the link in the sources section for a good read on anemones. Cheers

Asked by evilbatfangs - Wed Jun 30 00:10:57 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on how advanced it is. If it is at a stage called "in situ carcinoma" it is just the cervix (the part of your uterus close to your vagina) that is removed (cone biopsy). If it is at a more advanced stage, surgery might have to be more aggressive. After, you might need radiation therapy or chemotherapy to ensure complete removal of the cancer cells. Hope I could help.

How did America ever survive on only one short newscast each evening?
Q. We now have 24-hour a day reporting, and are barely making it. How did people survive with so little news coverage in the 50s and 60s?
Asked by pencil - Thu Jun 25 12:18:26 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There was a thing called newspapers. It was a novel concept. Writers would research a story and then put it into words. The brain works in mysterious ways. When you read a story, it is a cognitive process. You analyze the information and any background information. It is an intellectual exercise. But technology has changed that. TV news is a visual media and as such they are looking for interesting images. When reporting stories, especially if there is some form of violence associated with it, the visual images add an extra zing. But this zing is for emotion, not for the intellect. Because TV news plays to the emotional content of views,it must take some of the responsibility of dumbing down the american population and… [cont.]

How likely are you to survive from a 200 ft drop into water?
Q. My friends are trying to tell me that the majority of people will survive a 200 foot drop into water. They said that people in the military have to take drops like this all the time. I don't believe it. They are not saying that you won't break anything that you just more then likely won't die.
Asked by Scott W - Mon Aug 18 13:42:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You'd hit the water at v = sqrt(2gH) = sqrt(2*32*200) = sqrt(64*2*100) = 1.4*80 = 112 ft/sec. That's roughly 85 mph. At 85 mph, even water gets pretty hard. That results because water, as a liquid, is relatively incompressable. At 85 mph, it just will not give way fast enough to soften the fall. A typical aircraft carrier flight deck is about 100 ft above the water. At that height, the entry velocity would be slightly under 60 mph. Again, the water is hard. But, and this is a big BUT, if someone drops into the water straight up and down, feet first, it is survivable. On the other hand, if the entry is not picture perfect, chances of survival go way down. PS: Military do not have to take 200 ft drops all the time. In fact, there… [cont.]

What types of deodorant will survive being in a hot car?
Q. I like to keep some travel-size deodorant in the console of my car in case of emergencies. However, I live in Texas, and the interior gets very hot during the summer - hot enough to melt gels (Right Guard) and even powder solids (Degree). What other types of deodorants will survive these sorts of temperatures without getting ruined or denatured, or even worse, exploding or igniting?
Asked by bj - Fri Dec 28 14:26:48 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well you certainly should NOT go for gels! I made this mistake! I had a travelsized gel in the console in my door. I came to my car once and found it all over the place. At least my car smelled good but dang it! I keep Dove powder solid in my car and I live in Arizona. It keeps up fine even in our ridicu-hot summers. My best friend keeps Teen Spirit powder solid in her car and it also stands up. :-) Another thing you can consider if looking for a deodorant crystal. They usually have them at health stores and sometimes in the healthfood section of stores. That won't melt! :-D
