Q. In what ways do the mass media contribute to youth subcultures & the misrepresentation of youth crime? What consequences do these media representations have for society in general & the criminal justice system in particular?

A. Do some research. I'm not giving you a thorough answer as I have a sneaking suspicion that this is your homework. If it is then you should do the work yourself instead of copying and pasting answers provided for you.

Weber might say it is a status thing achived status vs ascribed staus Durkhein might see it as an abberation to the normal order of things. Gee I don't know ... what a question.

Movie that deals with minority groups, subcultures and underprivileged people?
Q. I would appreciate any suggestions for a movie to compare and contrast a novel I recently read that deals with abuse, addiction, control, minority groups, subcultures and how the underprivileged are represented. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer a movie although a short story would also suffice.

A. I've only seen a handful, but "Boyz N The Hood" was surprising accurate with its portrayal of South Central Los Angeles, and with what it's residents must go through. It's a great movie, and it does deal with what you've mentioned. I'd highly recommend it.

A. Like all movies, a documentary can only be as good as its filmmakers. It doesn't really matter if the filmmaker is an insider or outsider of the scene, because either viewpoint can be accurate. He or she does have to have an understanding of the scene though, and a way to find the compelling narrative that exists in reality. It really isn't as easy as it might look. There have been plenty of bad documentaries about rock. Here's a few good ones that captured the "scenes" pretty well: Monterey Pop Gimme Shelter The Decline of Western Civilization Part I The Decline of Western Civilization Part II (The Metal Years) GG Allin: Hated The Great Rock n Roll Swindle Some Kind of Monster This is Spinal Tap (mockumentary that is so accurate, it… [cont.]

How can a government enforce laws if factions and subcultures infiltrate your country?
Q. But the individuals have no intention of assimilating or following your laws. Is it not true that Islamists state, if the laws are not those of islam that they don't have to follow them? Should anyone stating that they will only follow laws of their choosing be allowed to enter or remain in a nation whose laws they intend to subvert?
Asked by Rja - Mon Sep 18 12:15:53 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Laws are enforced against people, not cultures. The idea of people refusing to obey the laws far predates Islam. Every society has criminals, and every society has people who don't think the laws should or do apply to them. That's a delusion, even if a common one. Even many of our elected officials think that the laws don't apply to them, so they ignore the laws. But that doesn't make it reality. The only question is, are we as a society willing to let these individuals ignore the laws, or are we going to enforce the laws. And that's our choice, not the choice of the criminals.

A. The 50's was all about conformity , mainly due to the fear of being considered a Communist, basically being completely different destroyed your life. I used to look upon the 1950's as time of greatness, but being older I realized how much of a hellhole it would have been if i'd lived in that time as the person I am today. There weren't that many movements that rose up and opposed society in the 50's. The only two I know of are the Rock and Roll Movement and the Beat movement in literature.

A. There is a difficulty about your quest. This is that the concept of sub cultures is not Marxian concept. If you consider it, the term implies that the major values of society are the accepted culture and that other cultures are lesser or 'sub cultures'. This is a conservative not a radical thesis. Bearing this in mind, the kind of issues that nevertheless do 'sort of' fit into your search are those marxist criminological articles that look at the way that crimes of ethnicity are dealt with by the police. A. There are several that live in the colonial Americas. Goth culture is really big there. If you're looking into history, perhaps you should read up about the Algonquins, Iriqouis, Menominees, Blackfoots, Naragansetts, Powhatans, Seminoles, Creeks, and Cherokees. Every one of those Native American tribes dwelled along the East Coast of the United States.

Is a multicultural society just a society full of subcultures?
Q. A more accurate mame would be a subcultural society; lacking the social cohision that gelled traditional societies together. The fragmented society seams to be agressive as different cultural groups compete.

A. Yes I agree, While you do get some mixing of cultures - such as someone like myself - a white girl who studied Classical Indian music and dance from an early age - you find that we tend to be in the minority. Most of the white people I know wouldn't dream of studying another culture or becoming involved in it and most are really ignorant of other cultures. And many of the asian people I know are the same - they stick to their own culture. Plus some people don't want to mix or share their culture. Muslims seem very anxious to avoid mixing into Western culture for fear it will pollute them in some way. People may live side by side with people of other cultures but the majority just stick to their own way of life and are pretty ignorant… [cont.]
