An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, which controls its own performance, and which has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word ὄργανον (organon [itself derived from the better-known word ἔργον ergon - work; deed - > ergonomics, etc]) meaning tool. The term is used in both daily and scientific English in multiple ways.

In the social sciences, organizations are studied by researchers from several disciplines, the most common of which are sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. The broad area is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. Therefore, a number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible, and others that are competing.

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

Do you know of any charitable organizations I could donate books to?
Q. Does anybody know of any charitable organizations in the San Fernando Valley (CA) that would accept/need a donation of books? It has to be a group/organization that would not resell them. We have boxes of leftover holiday clearance books that need a home. Most of them are children's books, but some are for adults. I would be grateful for any information you could give me! The only reason I say it cannot be an organization that will resell them is because those are our company rules, or else we cannot donate the books.

A. The local United Way can direct you to homeless shelters that house moms and kids and to domestic violence shelters. Kids and moms in shelters have had to leave behind a lot of things including books and books will encourage reading. Another possibility is to call your local schools and ask to speak to the hiomeless students coordinator. Your books can help make difference by opening the doors to reading for pleasure to kids who may never have owned a book of their own before.

What organizations are involved in humanitarian demining in Sub-Saharan Africa?
Q. The more organizations you give the better, the more detailed information the better, links to official sites would be appreciated, and articles talking about indigineous organizations are the best. I will choose the most helpful answer as best. If this belongs in another category please tell me which one. I need this for CX Debate, if you want to know why I would want this information. Demining is the removal of landmines, not Aids.

What basic services are provided by non-profit organizations?
Q. I'm trying to find out what basic services are provided by non-profit organizations. I know they all have their specific field, but there is a structure of sorts that all non profits will go through. I'm looking for a list of basic (and some not so basic) services they render, as well as a list of information detailing what the organization does through out the year. ie, look for sponsors 20% of the time, give away money or services 30% of the time, etc. Best answer will go to the person who is descriptive, detailed, knowlegable, and meets the requirements of the question. Thank you.
