The Goths (Gothic: 𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌰𐌽𐍃) were a heterogeneous East Germanic tribe, who played an important role in the history of the Roman Empire after they appeared on its lower Danube frontier in the third century.

The first recorded incursion of Goths into the Roman Empire took place in 238. Written records about the Goths prior to this date are scarce, the most important source is Jordanes' 6th-century, semi-fictional Getica which describes a migration from Scandza, believed to be located somewhere in modern Götaland (Sweden), to Gothiscandza, which is believed to be the lower Vistula region in modern Pomerania (Poland), and from there to the coast of the Black Sea (Scythia, now Ukraine, Romania and Moldova). The Pomeranian Wielbark culture and the Chernyakhov culture northeast of the lower Danube are widely believed to be the archaeological traces of this migration.

During the third and fourth centuries, the Goths were divided into at least two distinct groups, the Thervingi and the Greuthungi, separated by the Dniester River. They repeatedly attacked the Roman Empire during the Gothic War (376-382). In the late fourth century, the Huns invaded the Gothic region from the east. While many Goths were subdued and integrated into the Hunnic Empire, others were pushed towards the Roman Empire and converted to Arian Christianity by the half-Gothic missionary Wulfila, who devised a Gothic alphabet to translate the Bible.

In the fifth and sixth centuries, the Goths separated into two tribes, the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. Both established powerful successor states of the Western Roman Empire. In Italy the Ostrogothic Kingdom established by Theodoric the Great was defeated by the forces of the Eastern Roman Empire after the Gothic War (535–554). The fifth-century Visigothic Kingdom in Aquitaine was pushed to Hispania by the Franks in 507, converted to Catholicism by the late sixth century, and in the early eighth century fell to the Muslim Moors. While its influence continued to be felt in small ways in some west European states, the Gothic language and culture largely disappeared during the Middle Ages. In the 16th century a small remnant of a Gothic dialect was described as surviving in the Crimea.

Do goths ever wear any other colours besides black? What do they wear when they're just at home doing nothing?
Q. Are there any other colours besides black that goths wear? If so,what are they? And do they ever wear prints or florals if there's still quite a bit of black in the design as well?

A. I'll wear black until they invent a darker colour. Seriously "Goth" (not "High Goth) for 20+ years. [Later OK I also wear dark brown, dark green & purple. (Not much red my Mother always dressed me in red.) If it gets hideously hot I drag out my (dark coloured) 100% cotton Hippy outfits. & Looking at the Late Autumn temps ATM we're in for a Scorcher of a Summer - Library here I come!] .

Why do some people not like emos and goths?
Q. Why is it that some people think of emos and goths to be bad? Is it fair to exclude them from the world just because of the way they dress or think? Why can't they be treated like people and not like freaks? I personally have nothing against them, I just don't see why others do.

A. Personally I have nothing against them either. However, much of America's history shows that people just tend to resent those who are different from them. Emos/goths are different from a more traditional way of dressing and behaving, but they are the same people as everyone else, just like orientals and African Americans are.

What are the subcultural difference between Goths and Emos?
Q. And can you have the Goth or Emo mentality without dressing the part?

A. Of course! The biggest part of being a goth is the mindset of the person. You can dress however you like and be gothic, so long as you have the darker thought process..like finding art in a splatter of blood, or finding beauty in a bouquet of dead roses. You can be spiritually or philisophically inclined if you so wish, most goths are. Usually alternate religions, but a large portion of goths simply stick with christianity. Emos...I don't like emos...I'm always inclined to believe that emos are the suicide cutters...and they're a wanna-be goth...yeah, i know it's stereotypical, but...eh...
