What is the most realistic depiction of the mafia? Goodfellas or The Godfather?
Q. The Godfather crew enjoyed opera, fine wine and fine living, whereas the Goodfellas/Casino folks seemed to be more crass. Whats the real deal? Was there an upper crust/lower class division within the mafia?
Asked by attorneyinmichigan - Sat Nov 15 22:13:14 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Goodfellas for sure is the more realistic, being based on the memoirs of an actual Mob associate. The Godfather is an overly romanticized and wildly fictionalized portrayal of Mafia life even for the late '40s period in which its set. There was never any real honor or chivalry in the Mafia. Nobody ever referred to Mafia bosses as "Godfathers" before Puzo. And while it happens, it's very rare for a Mafia boss to be succeeded by his son.

Goodfellas Movie: Does the garlic trick actually work?
Q. This may sound kinda funny but I was wondering if it was true. In the movie Goodfellas, when the main character is in jail he talks about how when you make marinara sauce for pasta, if you cut the garlic with a box cutter, you can cut such a thin slice that the garlic liquifies in the sauce. Is that true? I don't think I would do it though even if it was true because first why use box cutters on garlic lol? And I usually saute the garlic and onions first, makes it taste better.

A. yes, you can cut the garlic so thin that it will basically dissolve in the sauce. You can use a razor blade for this.

How did the MADE Men find out who killed Batts of the movie Goodfellas?
Q. and why did they let Henry and DeNiro live? Was it because Tommy was totally of their race and thus subject to their rules?
Asked by Lord of all Earth - Fri May 9 20:12:55 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Henry and Jimmy didn't actually kill Batts in Goodfellas, Tommy did. Batts was a made guy, and Tommy wasn't... and the movie doesn't really explain how they knew. Henry does say, "it was about Billy Batts and other things..." My husband says the book goes more into detail, but I haven't read it. One of the best movies of all time tho!

Is there a better portrayal of the American Mafia than Goodfellas?
Q. As a lifelong fan of La Cosa Nostra in America, I've searched for authentic portrayals of Yankee goombahs in film. Goodfellas comes the closest to capturing LCN culture, in my opinion. A Bronx Tale is also very astute, and Donnie Brasco is pretty accurate too. Has anyone found a movie better at portraying The Mob than the above films? (For those about to type The Godfather -- they are brilliant movies but they give the gangsters class and nobility to which they are not entitled.) Thanks to all who answer. V

Why do people freak out? My husband and I own a GOODFELLAS TATTOO COMPANY.?
Q. I am a heavily tattooed female. When I have my tattoos covered, people talk to me like like a human being. When I have on short sleeves and my tattoos are showing, people stare, gasp, grab their children, will not talk to me, etc.. Why is this. I am a normal person. Just more colorful. My left arm is done completely in leopard print. The other tats are stars, birds, pin-up chick (which is fully clothed and is covered by clothing 99% of the time) no skulls, demons, satanic stuff.

A. They may be looking at them because of the art. I have seen some very interesting and pretty ones. I have relatives (brother) and many friends that have tattoos (I do have to say that they don't look as good on people once they start to fade and the skin starts to wrinkle/sag). However, I generally do no like tattoos. I think the human is body is pretty enough without tattoos. Furthermore, I have told my daughter that she is so beautiful that earrings are just a distraction from her natural beauty so she would be better off without them. Having tattoos does not make you not normal, though. Some people MAY (and I don't know this for a fact) associate tattoos with drunken sailors, convicts, bikers, etc. since they seem to be common… [cont.]

Was he intending on killing her? Maybe. Even though Karen didnt fall for his trap in the alley, you gotta believe if Jimmy really wanted her dead, then she would have been killed. If this was his intention, he could have given her the money to make her feel more safe around him, thus falling into his "dresses in the alley" trap and he could have just retrieved the money from her after she was killed. A. Both are excellent films, but for me, the Godfather is the best because it deals with an earlier time period, (i.e. the 40's and 50's) and it deals more with family relationships, (father, Vito, and his children, Sonny, Tom, Fredo, Connie, and Michael). Also, it has some of my favorite actors: Brando, Pacino, Robert Duvall, and Abe Vigoda. It's just an all-around epic movie.
