Film production--how different is the quality of work between a seasoned cameraman and an amateur?
Q. I am coordinating a film project in collaboration with a top notch production company. I want to save money by hiring a cheap cameraman from a company who makes wedding videos (I'm in China and theres plenty of those kind of cheap local outfits) to do the filming and turning that film over to the production company to do the editing and post production. The alternative is to have that company do the filming as well as the editing and post production. The filming content includes shots of a school and student life at the school as well as individual interviews. I expect some sacrifice in quality by hiring a less qualified local, but I am assuming it will still be good enough to make a good project, especially with professional editing… [cont.]

A. The big difference would be ...knowing your equipment and what it can do... and the bigger difference is framing shots to maximize the impact in relation to the storyline. utilizing light, subject placement on the background is another skill you only get from doing. Also aesthetic do they see like an artist...

Should I start my career in film by attending film school?
Q. I've always wanted to work in the film-movie industry. Lately I decided to attend a 2-year film school when I turn 18, but some of my friends discourage me from doing this. They say film school is money-wasting, that using that money to make a movie is even better! I'm very confused, if not attending a film school then what should I do?? Are there any other ways than going to film school? Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks very much in advance!

A. If you grew up around filmmakers, and have already learned everything they know about film making, then maybe you don't need film school. Otherwise, you should go to "film school." Note that there are various universities with which you can choose film as your major, so you'd still get a full, well-rounded college education, and also learn what you need about making films.

What horror film begins with the same or simular scene that it ends with?
Q. I need to think of a Horror/Thriller film that starts off with something to do with the future of the film. So it would perhaps begin with something that happens and the film is about leading up to this happenings and the scene from the beginning is perhaps repeated at the end. I no it sounds confusing but this is my last resort to get some ideas or remember films because my mind is blank! I suppose an example is the film Crash, although its not horror, it begins with the scene we see at the end of the film.

How do filmmakers make money in the film industry?
Q. One day I hope to study film and become a screenwriter/director. I don't know much about the film industry quite yet, so that's why I plan on getting into a good film program in college. I have only one concern: how do filmmakers such as producers, screenwriters, and directors make money from their films? How do independent filmmakers make money?
Asked by Jamie W - Tue Jan 6 23:44:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They make their money because they are essential to the film making process. When there movies get distributed, they get a cut of what the movie makes, just like the actors

Q. What is the appropriate film camera settings for sunny weather? What would be your safest bet? I'm working with a film camera (Nikon FE2) and I'm rather inexperienced. Any help would be great!
Asked by jdm_2460177 - Sun Mar 22 15:04:13 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the lens you are using. But start at 100 or 200 ISO and then f11 and 1/250th shutter speed. If you get into really sunny spots like a beach etc with heavy reflection you will have to speed the shutter to 1/500th or faster.

How do you unload 35mm film from a holga camera?
Q. I don't own a lomo camera but i do plan on getting one. I was watching the tutorials and all of them had tutorials on the 120 film but none on the 35mm. I do know that you have to unload it in the dark, but i'd like to figure out HOW. And i was also wondering if 1hr photo places could develop the 35mm film from a lomo.
Asked by Lainee - Tue Mar 3 20:58:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Labs who develop 35 mm film don't care what camera it was exposed in. LOMO ... to get the most out of this quirky plastic camera, using 120 film will give you the unique vignetting, colour aberrations at the edges, some neat light leaks and sometimes even emulsion scratching which will give you the unique images associated with a LOMO camera. Here is a link that will tell you all you need or want to know

Why does my school require students to take a film photography course as a prerequisite to all others?
Q. I don't deny that people still shoot in film, and I know that the controls are nearly identical from film to digital on newer SLRs, but why do they make us take a film class before we can move onto digital? The majority of my classmates will, I assume, be working in digital after this class. I've been told that this isn't unusual, that many programs require film and darkroom experience before moving to digital. Still - what's the benefit?!
Asked by Jeffrey - Thu Aug 30 16:35:29 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Film photography is where you will learn to master the basics. You will have a much better understanding of the relationship between f/ stop, shutter speed, and film speed when you are forced to deal with a permanent image on film. You have understand why an overexposed negative yields a very light print, why an underexposed negarive yields a very dark print. You will learn what techniques you can use to compensate for underexposure or overexposure. Working in a physical darkroom, if you're so lucky, will also give you the foundation for why you do the kinds of things you do with a digital darkroom on your computer. If all you ever want to be is a snap shot taking photographer, then learning photography from the ground up is a waste… [cont.]

What film is needed for a Polaroid Colorpack IV camera?
Q. Do i have to buy one of those ancient, out-of-production polaroid films on ebay or can i just go to the store and pick up fuji film? An exact film type would be awesome to know.
Asked by D-Scan - Wed Jan 28 18:32:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Polaroid Colorpack IV will take Polaroid packfilm. Look for 669, 667. Polaroid stopped making film at the end of last year, but Fujifilm has licensed the packfilm technology and is making replacement film that will work in your Colorpack. Look for Fuji FP-100C (color) or FP-100B (BW).

What is causing a clear film on the surface of my fish tank?
Q. I have had the 2.5 gallon tank with one fish in it for one year. A couple days ago I noticed a very thin, clear film on the top. When I touch it, it doesn't feel like anything at all - but I know it is there because it is catching air bubbles and the water is not circulating at the surface. I did a partial water change two days ago - and the clear film is back today. What's going on?
Asked by Renee - Mon Sep 15 14:52:36 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is normally due to excess of food. Fish food normally carries oil. The oil builds up if the food has time to dissolve in your water. A quick way to remove this film, is to put a paper towel on top of your water for a fraction of second to soak the oil. Do it about 3 times, or until nothing is visible. For prevention, just feed less, and crumble your food less. I used to have that in my 30-gallon, until i started to feed a lot less. :)

A. Both MA and Ri are on the fast track to developing complete local studio production companies. Land has already been purchased in Plymouth, MA and the RI developer doesn't seem to be far behind. It's all about the money. With production facilities available in this area, movie producers can cut expenses. MA is offering tax breaks to filmmakers. If the rest of production (not just the filming) of movies is done locally, it means a great deal of revenue for the states and jobs for local people.

A. you need to have a video and audio output on your TV. Take the outputs and run them into your camera or a vcr and tape them like you would a program... If you don't, try running your xbox into a vcr then out to your TV and record the signal as it's going into the recorder.
