A. Gimp is a graphics program where you create the designs. A better altenative to myspace for art is www.deviantart.com By all means download Gimp and use it to create art...it's free and in many ways as nice as Photoshop.

How do I make images on GIMP smaller without them being blurry?
Q. When ever I try to resize images on GIMP and make them smaller (not bigger!), they get all blurry. Is there something I can do to make them not blurry? You would think making them smaller would make them better quality >.<
Asked by Luke - Mon Jun 7 20:47:59 2010 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Did you try using the resize tool in your Tool Menu? o.o That's the only way I know how to make them smaller. If that still makes it blurry, trying useing the Blurr/Sharpen tool to sharpen the image up a little bit. If you really want it sharpened up, trying dowloading GREYC if it's not already in your Filters>Enhance options.

In Gimp, how do I make part of the top layer transparent to show the bottom layer?
Q. I need help from someone who is familiar with the program Gimp (similar to photoshop). I need to make part of the top layer transparent so that the bottom layer will show through.
Asked by Summer - Fri Aug 14 18:47:51 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First off, is the top layer white, or any other solid color? Because in that case, you can just select that layer and erase the areas you want the bottom layer to show through on. To make a fully transparent layer to begin with, select "Layer>New Layer". In the dialogue box that shows up, there should be an option asking which mode you want this new layer to be in; just click "Transparent", and voila. No erasing needed.

How do you smart scissor a image on gimp and cut the background off?
Q. I have a grey scale jpeg, and I want all the white to be transparent so I can put a background behind it and just have the black/grey part of the image stand out. I've tried using the smart scissors, but I can't seem to get them to pull the white off the image. How do I do this in GIMP?
Asked by rubrducky99 - Mon Mar 16 11:33:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you want ALL of the white to be transparent... 1) Go to Layer>Transparency>Color to Alpha and, if white's not already the chosen color, change the color to white. If you want a certain white region to be transparent... 1) Go to Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel 2) Use the Color Select to select the particular region 3) Hit delete 4) Rinse and repeat for all applicable regions.

Asked by Just Brandon - Mon Jun 18 02:10:00 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. within gimp you would apply parts of animation in each frame, like a blinking heart shape would be in frame one, not in two and in three again, glitter would be similar, pixelating selected areas in each frame but randomly altered per frame, as well the objects within a frame can be moved, so each layer equals a cel and when done, you can test filter/ animation before saving, then save as export to gif file animation, ..

A. In GIMP, click Windows > Recently Closed Docks > and choose "Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo . . . " Don't worry, if you close either of the two docks - that's how you get them back.

A. Okay. (: I saw your post earlier today, did you figure it out since you posted the question? I just started using gimp today and found out what you were talking about. ^^ What I did was - finish your picture completely in gimp (save it if you want just like your doing in gimp) - copy your picture and opened paint - paste in paint - save in paint (yes the regular old paint aha) and you should be able to upload from there (: Just submit and all that stuff at DA. Hope I helped you or you figured it out already! (:

How do I place a consistent image over an animation in GIMP?
Q. I've created a fire animation using a tutorial, but I wish to place a stationary image over the top of the animation using GIMP. How do I do this? I've tried playing around with it, but if I place the image on every frame, the animation stops, and if I place it in a seperate layer, it just flashes in at the end of the animation.

A. Gimp ~image editor, so you have flames animated in layers, and you want to place a still object in front of flames, while in motion, if you merged copy of image on every frame, then all the frames would still be separate, and filter >animation > playback would still animate all frames with object as still, make sure image is saved as xcf, and save final copy as gif, if layers already saved as gif, other option is to optimize all, but use copy of file, this takes image and erasing what has changes to next frame if you have GAP installed you can us main image as bottom background and use video> animation> overlay background ..

A. What you're talking about is a clipping mask in Photoshop. The basic idea is that you make a copy of your picture on to a new layer and desaturate it. Make sure that your color layer is below your b/w layer. Then you create a clipping mask and using a paintbrush you "paint" away the areas where you want the color to show through. This tutorial should get you started: Hope that helps and good luck!

How do I fill a space of similar colors with a gradient with GIMP?
Q. I'm not very good at GIMP, but I'm OK. Say I'm trying to fill a space like I would with the paint bucket fill tool. I want to fill it with a colorful gradient instead of one color or one of those fill patterns. I couldn't find the answer in any of the GIMP help thingys.

A. Well, if you are trying to fill up the whole canvas with the gradient, just select your gradient tool (tap "L"). If you are trying to get a section of a canvas to be filled with your gradient, just select your select tool free-form: tap "F". rectangular: tap "R" ellipse: tap "E". Make a selection, then fill it with your gradient.

A. Sorry, I don't know what version you have, so these are for 2.2. If you have a later version, you'll find the same tools in different menu places sometimes. The first way is to use edge-detect. (filters->edge detect->edge). This will make white or colored lines on black - invert this with (layer->colors->invert). The second method is a couple of filters found in (filters->artistic). They are 'photocopy' and 'cartoon'. photocopy will produce black lines and grey tones on white, while cartoon will do pretty much the same but leave the colors the same. In both cases, you can tweak the results a little. I'd also recommend using the layer dialog (Control-L) and making multiple copies of the base layer of the image, then experimenting with… [cont.]
