GIMP (The GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free software raster graphics editor commonly used to process digital photographs and other graphics. Primarily, GIMP is used as a tool for photo enhancement. Typical uses include resizing and cropping photos, altering colors, combining multiple images, removing unwanted image components, and converting between different image formats, as well as creating graphics and logos. GIMP can also be used to create basic animated images in GIF format. The product vision for GIMP is to become a high-end graphics application for the editing and creation of original images, icons, graphical elements of web pages and art for user interface elements. GIMP may also be used as a platform for the development of cutting-edge scientific image-processing algorithms. GIMP started out as a university project in 1995 by Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball, currently GIMP is maintained and enhanced by a group of volunteers under the auspices of the GNOME Project. Asked by cherry* - Fri May 1 14:05:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments How do i reestablish control of Layers in GIMP? Q. I am new to photo editing and just a minute ago when i opened a new image I have some how lost all control of the layers dialog box in GIMP. The box is there but every option is grayed out and will not let me control anything. It will not let me even add a layer. A window comes up asking for the specifications of the new layer when i request one but it does nothing. Any help, no matter how basic, would be appreciated. Asked by Chirs W - Fri Nov 21 19:49:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not quite sure what is happening so this reply is more suggestive than anything else. FYI: When you open a new image, one that is actually a new Gimp window with nothing in it, that is one layer and so you will not have any other layers. If you open a saved file that wasn't saved in a file format that supports layers then you will not have the multiple layers. Under Image go to "Mode" and check to see if it is set to RGB. If not change it to RGB. When you are trying to add the new layer do you see a trace line (for instance ---) around any part of the image, if so try unselecting that first under the Gimp menu and then adding a new layer. Answered by Who Knows??? - Mon Nov 24 19:32:52 2008 How comparable is the GIMP to Photoshop?
Q. I have some experience with Photoshop and no experience with the GIMP. Could someone please tell me how it stands up to Photoshop and what the disadvantages of it are? Thanks! Asked by sunny-d alright! - Thu Jan 3 20:06:08 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well Photoshop has more features than gimp, but Gimp is also pretty good. The only thing it lacks is a decent eraser, it doesn't have a magic eraser or a background eraser, but it does have a magic wand which kind of helps. but anyways, Gimp is less complicated than photoshop. You can still make animated gifs and stuff. but in my opinion, Gimp is pretty good compared to photoshop, considering the fact that you don't have to pay for Gimp and it's not just a free trial. And gimp has features too that Photoshop doesn't have like film strips and coffee stains. so yeaahh.. hope my answer helps :) Answered by Erica M - Fri Jan 4 06:11:14 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Gimp" |
