Geek.Kon began in 2007, cosponsored by the University of Wisconsin–Madison East Asian Studies Department[2], with an attendance between 1800 and 2000 people. In 2008 the event occupied two different buildings on September 27 and 28. The 2009 convention will be held October 23-25, off campus at the Madison Sheraton Hotel.[3]

History

The convention was started by UW students Louise Behnke, head of the SciFi Club, and Jackie Lee, head of the Anime Club.[4] The two groups and the Madison Academics’ Gaming Enthusiast Society were planning the convention by March 2007.[5]

The 2007 inaugural Geek.Kon was co-sponsored by the East Asian Studies department at the UW,[2] Lynn’s Craft Shop, and Four Star Video Heaven.[5] It ran from 9:00 AM until 11:00 PM Saturday, October 6 October 6 is the 279th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. Introduced in Japan in 1998 as part of the Bemani series, and released in North America and Europe in 1999, Dance Dance Revolution is the pioneering series of the rhythm and dance genre in video tournaments. Approximately 600 to 1,000 attendees were expected for the 2007 event.[6][2][5] The final number of registered con goers was "almost 2,000" according to the convention.[7] Later reports indicates that there were 1,800 attendees.[8]

Guests scheduled for 2007 included the creators of Chad Vader[9][2][5][4], musician Luke Ski The great Luke Ski is the stage name of Luke Sienkowski, a parody, filk and rap musician who writes, records and performs comedy music. In 2008, the convention ran September 27 and 28, 2008.[7] The convention grew enough that two buildings were required.[13] Preliminary attendance for saturday was 900 attendees.[8]

The 2009 convention is scheduled October 23-25, off campus at the Madison Sheraton Hotel.[14] Guests scheduled for 2009 include voice actor Kyle Hebert, comedian Sandeep Parikh and fantasy author Chad Corrie along with the steampunk mystery LARP group, Steam Century.[15]
